Summer McIntosh faces a gruelling World Aquatics Championships schedule in her bid to equal Michael Phelps’ historic record.
The Canadian swimming prodigy is already a two-time Olympian after making her debut aged 14 in 2021.
McIntosh followed up with three gold medals in Paris last summer as well as a silver.
Meanwhile, the 18-year-old claimed two titles at each of the last two World Championships in 2022 and 2023.
However, she is aiming to go even further in Singapore next week as she aims to emulate Phelps’ heroics.
McIntosh is looking to become only the second swimmer ever to win five individual events at a single World Championships.
Phelps is the only athlete to have achieved the feat after doing so in Melbourne back in 2007.
The American swimming legend won a total of seven golds during the event after success in both the 4x100m and 4x200m freestyles.
He would go on to retire with a record 26 world titles as well as his unmatched 23 Olympic gold medals.
Those Olympic triumphs came across four games and included eight at Beijing in 2008.
Whilst McIntosh is not looking to recreate that performance in Los Angeles in three years yet, she already looks up to Phelps as an inspiration.
She explained: “I really like Michael. He’s the GOAT, the face of swimming… to follow anything he did is really cool.”
Phelps won seven golds at the 2007 World Championships, with five individual medalsGetty McIntosh will equal Phelps’ feat if she wins all of her solo events but faces a gruelling scheduleGettyThe youngster faces a daunting schedule if she is to follow in Phelps’ footsteps, though.
Including heats, semi-finals and finals across both individual and relay events, McIntosh could compete in 16 races in just seven days.
Her quest for history will see her compete in the 400m freestyle, 200m individual relay, 200m butterfly, 800m freestyle and 400m individual medley.
McIntosh is also part of the Canadian team in the 4x100m and 4x200m freestyle relays.
She already holds either the world or national record in each of her five individual events.
It comes after clocking world record times in the 400m freestyle, 200m individual medley and 400m individual medley.
