Arizona Diamondbacks pitchers Ryne Nelson, Anthony DeSclafani and Kevin Ginkel shut out the Pittsburgh Pirates with only one hit allowed through 11 innings for a 1-0 road victory on Friday evening.
Nelson started the shutout with six innings before DeSclafani played the role of bullpen hero with four hitless frames, stranding the ghost runner in the 10th.
The Diamondbacks broke the stalemate on an Eugenio Suarez sacrifice fly to score Corbin Carroll in the top of the 11th inning, and Ginkel recorded the save.
Ginkel’s defense stepped up, as left fielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. made a sliding catch for the second out, holding a baserunner on third. It turned out to be the game-saving play.
The ballgame ended on a Nick Gonzalez ground out to third baseman Blaze Alexander, whose throw to first required a stretch from Suarez, who had never played first base in the big leagues before the 10th inning on Friday.
This was the fourth game in franchise history in which the D-backs finished with 11 or more scoreless innings pitched, according to Stathead.
Friday also marked the 15th game in D-backs history in which they went to extra innings in a scoreless tie. The last time it occurred was on June 14, 2022, against the Cincinnati Reds (5-3 loss).
Arizona (51-53) improved to 4-7 in extra innings this season.
Nelson has delivered six or more innings with two or fewer runs in four of his last five outings, lowering his ERA to 3.29.
He retired the first five batters of the game before a Tommy Pham triple in the second inning. Nelson stranded a runner in scoring position in both the second and third frames before going on a run of eight straight retired batters.
Nelson allowed one hit while striking out four and walking two, finishing with 88 pitches to tie a season high. The D-backs have won seven of his last eight starts.

Pirates starter Mike Burrows matched Nelson with six scoreless innings. The Diamondbacks did not reach base until a Ketel Marte walk in the fourth inning, and their first hit was a Gurriel single in the fifth.
Burrows allowed four earned runs in 3.1 innings when he faced the Diamondbacks in May.
Both bullpens picked up where the starters left off, as DeSclafani threw three shutout frames for the Diamondbacks to reach extras, stranding two runners in the bottom of the ninth.

The second of three games at PNC Park begins Saturday at 3:40 p.m. MST.
Merrill Kelly will make his final start before the trade deadline next Thursday, and given the trade speculation surrounding the Diamondbacks, this could be Kelly’s final start with the club. Kelly has been with the D-backs since 2019, and he’s having an excellent season with a 3.21 ERA.
Pittsburgh will start left-handed veteran Andrew Heaney with superstar Paul Skenes lined up for Sunday.
