The lawsuits claimed that social media fueled the racist conspiracy theories that led Payton Gendron to kill ten Black people at the grocery store. The suit also said the site algorithms addicted Gendron to the social media platforms.

The social media companies argued they were merely hosts of the content and not the creators, asserting immunity from liability. The court agreed with this argument.
