Monroe County DMV appointments booked up for ‘foreseeable future’ as demand for Real ID surges

IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. — If you’re waiting to get an appointment at the DMV, you’re not alone. Local DMVs are still dealing with a surge of people looking to upgrade to a Real ID and the appointments are all booked up for the foreseeable future.

There are 100,000 people in Monroe County alone whose licenses expire this year and need to be renewed. Most of them are looking to upgrade, which requires an appointment, and there just aren’t any.

Cheryl Huddleston, who recently secured her Real ID, shared her experience.

“I had an out-of-state license, then changed to a regular license and then had to come back for a Real ID cause I did not have the proper documents with me,” Huddleston said.

Huddleston plans on flying somewhere in September, so it was something that needed to get done. Many others in the area are still waiting, facing the same issue.

“There’s no appointments for anything!” Huddleston said.

In Monroe County, you need an appointment to get a Real ID and most days, the appointment system will tell you there are none available.

“We weren’t expecting to be heading into late summer with it still at this high demand,” said Monroe County Clerk Jamie Romero.

Romeo said the appointment system only books out 45 days and all spots are currently filled. The closure of a DMV in the Syracuse area has added to the traffic in Monroe County.

“We are an agent of the state of New York, providing a state service, we don’t want to turn our DMV staff into bouncers checking residency when they get in the door,” said Romeo.

Romeo mentioned efforts to expand appointment availability.

“We are actually looking to expanding the number because right now when we put out appointments, it’s for all,” Romeo said.

Jennifer Lewke: “Why can’t you sort of shift resources and focus on that for a while until this backlog, until this demand has eased?”

Romeo: “We’re continuing to do that, we’re trying to balance that increasing appointment access while still providing walk-in access while still meeting the needs of our auto dealers, while also making sure we don’t close down the mobile DMVs.”

For those seeking a Real ID, Romeo ensured they hear peoples frustrations and are advising people to have patience and reach out in emergencies.

If your license has a star or flag, you’re Real ID compliant and need an appointment. Alternatively, a passport or passport card can be used for flying. Once an appointment is secured, the Real ID should arrive in two to three weeks.

If anyone doesn’t have a REAL ID or passport, they will be moved to a different line for additional screening, which may cause delays.
