Nick Saban appeared on Fox News on Friday morning to discuss President Trump’s new executive order related to college athletics.
The executive order, signed on Thursday, deals with numerous issues facing college sports. For Saban, he says it allows for the “educational model” of college athletics to continue even in the revenue-sharing era.
“President Trump’s executive order takes a huge step in providing the educational model that has always been what we’ve sort of tried to promote to create opportunities for players, male and female alike, revenue and non-revenue, so that they can have development as people, students, and develop careers and develop professionally if that’s what they choose to do,” Nick Saban said.
Under new House settlement guidelines, revenue sports such as football and basketball are expected to receive the vast majority of financial support at most schools. President Trump’s executive order aims to “protect” opportunities for women’s sports and non-revenue sports moving forward.
Later on in his appearance on Fox and Friends, Saban said college athletics is at a crossroads between.
“I think we sort of need to make a decision here,” Saban said. “Do we want to have an education-based model, which I think the President made a huge step toward doing that. Or do we want to have universities sponsor professional teams? And I think most people would choose the former.”
