ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Have you heard of “The Crossing?” It’s a unique feature of the Erie Canal where the canal intersects with the Genesee River at Genesee Valley Park. This week, News10NBC’s Chief Investigative Reporter Berkeley Brean went to check it out.
The Crossing is the only intersection of its kind in New York.
George Thomas from RiverWatch, a group focused on the quality of the Genesee River, said, “I’ve seen this from the water but never been here before from this side. It’s kind of cool.”
The Crossing is where the canal water turns left into the river, and the river water turns right into the canal. Thomas said this intersection causes the river to have a more opaque nature, potentially impacting its aesthetic downstream during low summer flows.

Joe Makarewicz, a retired professor from SUNY Brockport, conducted a study that found 15% of the phosphorus in the Genesee River comes from the canal.
“That’s the second highest tributary in the whole Genesee River so it’s having potentially a major effect on algae growth,” said Makarewicz.
Despite the findings, the canal is not part of the state’s management plan for the river. Makarewicz expressed hope that the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and other entities will consider the canal’s impact on the river.
The DEC is developing a plan with regional agencies, the Genesee Coalition, and other partners to address actions in the Genesee River watershed.
