The Weld County commissioners will soon make a final decision on the future location of the county’s judicial center.
After months of deliberation and negotiations with Greeley and other third-party consultants, the commissioners will announce their decision during their regular meeting on Monday, July 28 at the Weld County Administration Building, 1150 O St., Greeley.
The board plans to conclude its regular 9 a.m. business agenda and then take a recess until 10 a.m. to hear a presentation by staff and consultants regarding options for the location. The commissioners will make their decision following the presentation.
With a rapidly growing population, county officials faced a challenge when they learned they needed to expand the Weld County Judicial Center, located in downtown Greeley, to accommodate two additional judges by the end of 2025. The state has delayed the requirement for the additional judges, giving the county more time to construct the necessary space.
“As a board, we have performed our due diligence to explore options for the judicial center being located downtown or on the county’s O Street property,” Commissioner Chair Perry Buck said in a news release. “The firms the county hired to handle the negotiation of land and demolition costs are doing a great job getting us the information we need to make the best decision possible, not only for the taxpayers of Weld County but also for our operations for decades to come.”
This need for space had prompted the county to consider whether it would construct the additional courtrooms at the center’s current location or relocate the judicial center closer to other county operations on O Street. Early cost estimates differed widely, with Greeley-based Richmark Development quoting a price of $209 million to keep the courts in downtown Greeley, compared to an estimate of $463 million to relocate to O Street.
Since then, the commissioners hired two firms, PCL Construction and RJA Engineering, to research and verify the costs of building at either location.
In addition to the proposed price differences, many city officials have commented on the massive and detrimental impact moving the judicial center would have on downtown Greeley. It is estimated that a move to O Street would result in the exodus of 500 employees and the loss of nearly $2.5 million annually from the area.
