ONE person has been killed and another person shot at the University of New Mexico, and the suspect is still on the loose.
Police told students to shelter in place and avoid campus as they hunt the shooter who opened fire early on Friday morning.
The university said cops received a report of gunshots fired at around 3 am at a student housing center at the Albuquerque college.
When officers responded to the scene at Casas del Rio, they found two victims shot.
One person died while the other sustained non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
The suspect is still at large and may still be on campus, the University of New Mexico Police Department said.
The university closed the central campus and told students to stay where they are.
An alert announcing the shelter-in-place went out on social media at 6:17 am.
“Out of an abundance of caution, UNM has closed its Albuquerque central campus,” school officials said.
“The Health Sciences Center, including all clinical components remains open.”
