Strong thunderstorms that swept through the Chicago area may have played a role in a dangerous gas station explosion in Berwyn Thursday, with the entire building going up in flames after downed power lines were reported.
Early Friday morning, a gate surrounded the BP Amoco gas station, at 6749 Ogden Ave., with the gas station building reduced to a pile of scraps and mangled metal.
According to the Berwyn Police Department, officers arrived in the area about 3:42 p.m. Thursday after reports of multiple power lines down due to storms. As officers worked to assist with traffic control and safety measures, two main gas lanes at the BP Amoco gas station ignited, police said.
Neighboring residents and businesses were evacuated, police said, with firefighters working to battle the blaze. Minutes later, the gas lines exploded, police said, leading to the “complete collapse of the gas station,” and nearby windows shattered.
Video taken by a bystander and posted on the Citizen app captured heavy flames and extensive damage. Crews battled flare-ups well into the evening, hours after the explosion occurred.
Ben Cyer, who owns the auto shop across the street, had multiple windows damaged in the explosion.
“When we saw the building go up, I sweat to God, it was like a slow-motion video,” he said. “Nothing I ever experienced in my whole entire life.”
No injuries were reported, police said.
No further details were released Friday morning and an investigation remains ongoing.
