Wrexham are said to have made an approach to sign Christian Eriksen after his exit from Manchester United.
The Welsh side are preparing for Championship football having won three consecutive promotions from the National League to the second tier.
With the Premier League an ambitious target for next season, the Welsh club looked to sign top flight experience to help their promotion push.
According to Eriksen’s agent, Wrexham made an attempt to bring the midfielder to the Racecourse Ground this summer.
The Denmark international recently left United upon the expiration of his contract following three seasons at Old Trafford.
Eriksen, who starred for Premier League rivals Tottenham, made 107 appearances for United, winning the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
The 33-year-old is said to have been impressed by the proposal made by Wrexham, but wants remain in top flight football.
Clubs from Saudi Arabia, the United States, Turkey and Portugal are said to have made approaches for the 33-year-old.
“Wrexham are really upgrading everything both on and off the field,” Eriksen’s representative Martin Schoots told the Mail.
“And it is a hugely impressive project, as you can see from the presence of people like Michael Williamson [Wrexham’s experienced American CEO] there.
“But Christian still wants to play in a first-tier competition and he absolutely wants to stay in Western Europe.
“There are some contacts going on but it has to suit both sides.”

Josh Windass is another key arrival on a free transfer after he left Sheffield Wednesday by mutual consent.
Wales goalkeeper Danny Ward and Lewis O’Brien have also moved from Leicester City and Nottingham Forest respectively.
