More than 9,000 people in northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana remained without power Friday morning after severe thunderstorms tore across the Chicago area Thursday, leaving a trail of downed power lines and trees in its path.
The power outages come as more rounds of rain and storms were expected through the weekend, the NBC 5 Storm Team said.
According to ComEd’s outage map, the majority of those without power were in Cook, DuPage and Will Counties. A message on ComEd’s website said crews were working to restore service, with 80% of outages expected to be restored by 12 pm. Friday. The remaining outages were expected to be restored by Saturday afternoon, ComEd said.
Thursday’s thunderstorms also led to brief ground stops at both Midway and O’Hare International Airports. The powerful storms may have played a role in a gas station explosion in suburban Berwyn.
While power outages remain for some, most of the morning commute Friday was expected to be dry, NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes said, though a couple spotty showers could form.
Friday’s temperatures will still be humid, but cooler, with highs in the 80s and heat indices in the 90s. Downstate, heat advisories were still in effect.
In the afternoon and evening, scattered thunderstorms may develop, Jeanes said, though they’ll be “hit or miss.” Overnight and through Saturday morning however, there’s a greater chance for widespread rain, followed by another round of storms in the afternoon.
Isolated to widely scattered t-storms are possible this PM, but the greater coverage of storms is expected tonight into Sat. — NWS Chicago (@NWSChicago) July 25, 2025“More rain is possible Saturday evening and night,” Jeanes said.
According to the National Weather Service, Saturday morning’s storms could come with “torrential rainfall and localized flooding.” The strongest storms may also contain gusty winds, the NWS said.
Temperatures Saturday would remain in the 80s, but with high humidity, Jeanes said. Sunday and Monday the heat and humidity will increase again, Jeanes said, with a heat index Monday as high as 110 degrees.
But by the middle of next week, things will start to cool down, especially by Wednesday, Jeanes said, with below average temperatures in the 70s and 80s through next weekend.
