PITTSFORD, N.Y. — As the Buffalo Bills entered day two of training camp at St. John Fisher University, the contract situation of running back James Cook remained a topic of intrigue.
Cook, who was arguably the most consistent offensive option for the Bills aside from Josh Allen, is in the final year of his rookie deal and seeking a new contract.
Cook did say that if he can and if its possible, he would like to stay in Buffalo, but he says that he’s confident he’s going to get a deal done whether its here or elsewhere.
That doesn’t stop the Bills from wanting Cook to be here long-term. A lot of coaches and players have expressed their desire to keep the guy who has been the number one running back in Buffalo the past few years.
“James is a football player when you roll the ball out he wants to play ball,” said Offensive Coordinator Joe Brady. “All of the other stuff kind of takes care of itself and I understand it’s the business element that’s bigger than me.”
Head Coach Sean McDermott echoed a similar sentiment, praising Cook’s dedication and readiness to play.
“Couldn’t be more pleased with James and him being here on time and ready to go,” McDermott said. “I had a chance to meet him, greet him yesterday and shake his hand, look him in the eye and he’s ready to go.”
Left tackle Dion Dawkins also stood in Cook’s corner, acknowledging the business side of the sport while emphasizing Cook’s character.
“There’s a business side of all of this, right? People can paint it however they want to paint it,” Dawkins said. “Cook is a good dude. He’s here when he’s supposed to be.”
Cook emphasized his commitment to his teammates and the game.
“I don’t owe it to nobody but my teammates and myself and my family,” said Cook. “So by me participating, showing my teammates that I love the game.”
The Bills have extended a lot of other players this offseason, but Cook remains without a new contract. The big questions are whether a deal will be reached during training camp and if Cook will stay in Buffalo or move on to another team.
