CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- A man is behind bars after a crash that hurt two Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers, CMPD confirms.
Just before 6 p.m. on Wednesday, two officers were driving outbound in the Independence Boulevard bus lanes near the Briar Creek Road exit when officials say a Buick Regal driving inbound crossed the center line and hit the cruiser head-on.
Two officers were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries but have since been released to recover at home. A third CMPD officer was injured while responding to the incident, but has also been released from the hospital.
The CMPD cruiser was seen damaged on the front-passenger side corner, and the other vehicle was up against the lane barrier. The Independence bus lanes are for official use only.
Several lanes of were closed following the crash; however, Independence Boulevard reopened by 7:45 p.m. The closure caused inbound traffic to back up to Sharon Amity Road.
Officials say the driver of the Buick, 36-year-old Thomas Lee Royster, was driving while impaired, which is believed to be the cause of the crash. He was taken to the hospital, but has since been released into the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
According to court records, Royster's driver's license was revoked in February after being sentenced for a Level 5 DWI. He is charged and cited with the following:
Two counts of Felony Serious Injury Driving While License Revoked for a prior DWI Open Container Reckless Driving Unsafe Movement HOV Lane Violation Seatbelt Violation Driving Left of CenterRoyster was booked into the Mecklenburg County Detention Center around 4:30 a.m. on Thursday. Later in the day, he was assigned a public defender and issued a $30,000 secured bond for at least one of the charges.
