Point Loma High to hold football preview events for fans

POINT LOMA – Fans who can’t wait to see the 2025 edition of the Pointer football team will have two opportunities to catch an early peek at the team.

On Aug. 8, the varsity players will be split into two separate teams and square off against each other in a traditional “steak and hot dog” game. The winning team will dine on steaks while the losing team munches on hot dogs. The game begins at 7 p.m. on Benne Edens Field. Admission is free.

“We want all of the community to come and see us,” said head coach Ryan Price. “Everyone is welcome!”

On Friday, Aug. 15, the Pointers will hold what could be a four-team scrimmage in which all teams play their offense and defense against each of the other schools. The field will be split in half at the 50-yard line to allow a game in progress on each side. This event is scheduled for 6 p.m.

These scrimmages are popular because they provide an early look at multiple schools

At press time, Price was finalizing teams for the event. The Pointers and Poway High’s Titans are set with the final two schools yet to be named. Admission is free, and again Price welcomes fans.

Before these events take place, the Pointers will follow local CIF rules and gradually add helmets and pads to their practices over a five-day period beginning on July 31. Price said the process is known as “acclimatization.”

Earlier, on July 26, the entire varsity Pointer team and coaches will head to a resort location in Julian for a short retreat at which Price has plans to accomplish many goals.

“We will do team bonding activities, go on some ropes courses, and do a lot of things to build camaraderie,” Price said. “We will share stories about adversities we’ve all gone through. There is also a grass field, so we can run through some plays, and we’ll do a classroom session.”

Perhaps most importantly, the players will elect team captains for the 2025 season.

The Pointers open non-league play on Aug. 22 when they travel north to Del Norte High to face the Nighthawks.

They next travel south to Otay Ranch on Aug. 29 before returning home to face Scripps Ranch on Sept. 5. Following the annual bye week, they play Eastlake on Sept. 19, and La Jolla in a battle for “The Shoe” on Sept. 26 at home.
