The Green Bay Packers have unveiled their newest throwback jerseys and, well, let’s just say Illinois fans have a lot to say about them.
And not just because of the Bears-Packers rivalry.
The new Green Bay uniforms do away with the team’s ever-prominent green and gold and instead opt for a historic take on their 1923-style jerseys — with blue and gold.
“The 1923 Classic Uniform includes navy blue jerseys with dark gold numbers and dark gold stripes, tan pants and navy socks. The uniform is inspired by what the team wore in 1923, its first season as a publicly owned corporation,” the team said in a release.
The new ensemble also features what the team described as a “hand-painted helmet designed to emulate the vintage leather look of the NFL’s earliest helmets,” including a leather strap and stitching effects.
But while some praised the retro design, others took issue with it — many noticing a resemblance to a popular University of Illinois throwback.
“Just ripped off Illinois,” one user wrote on X in response to the Packers’ reveal.
“Copy and pasting @IlliniFootball,” another said.
“Could’ve tried to be not be completely obvious copying Illinois football,” another wrote.
In August 2024, the University of Illinois unveiled 1920s-themed uniforms designed to emulate those worn by “the Fighting Illini football teams that represented the university during the early years of the program’s existence.”
The jerseys featured a “blue base with tannish-gold stripes that form a pyramid shape and run from the bottom of the shirt to the top of the numbers.”
“The tannish-gold hue seen in the stripes will be reflected in the color of the custom pants, and will be paired with blue socks to complete the classic look,” the team said in a release at the time.
In addition, the team utilized hand-painted helmets designed to resemble the leather helmets worn during that era of football.
While Illinois has not yet responded to the Packers’ recent announcement, fans are making their thoughts known.
The Packers are set to debut the throwback uniforms during a game at Lambeau Field this fall, though no date has been announced so far.
