‘Injured’ Rishabh Pant available to bat in Manchester Test, confirms BCCI

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued a statement regarding wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant’s injury status on Day 2 (Thursday, July 24) of the Test between India and England. As per the statement, Pant will not keep wickets for the remainder of the match at Old Trafford in Manchester.

The 27-year-old suffered a right foot injury while attempting a reverse shot off Chris Woakes on the opening day. The ball took an inside edge and struck his right toe. He was unable to walk properly and left the field in visible distress. He had to be stretchered off and was later taken to the hospital for scans.

The BCCI took to X (formerly Twitter) to share that Pant, who injured his right foot, will not keep wickets for the rest of the match. Dhruv Jurel will take over wicketkeeping duties. However, Pant has rejoined the team on Day 2 and will be available to bat if required.

"??????: Rishabh Pant, who sustained an injury to his right foot on Day 1 of the Manchester Test, will not be performing wicket-keeping duties for the remainder of the match. Dhruv Jurel will assume the role of wicket-keeper," the BCCI wrote.

"Despite his injury, Rishabh Pant has joined the team on Day 2 and will be available to bat as per team requirements."

27-Year-Old Forced to Retire Hurt on 37 on Day 1

Rishabh Pant was forced to retire hurt on 37* (48) after injuring his toe. It is unclear whether he will bat again in the match. India currently trail the five-match series 2-1, with losses at Headingley and Lord’s. Their only victory came in the second Test at Edgbaston by a 336-run margin.

According to The Indian Express, Pant has been advised six weeks of rest and will miss the final Test at The Oval, starting July 31. Ishan Kishan is expected to join the squad in his place.

Kishan recently impressed in County Cricket for Nottinghamshire, scoring 87 against Yorkshire and 77 against Somerset. He has only played two Tests for India but has scored 3,611 runs in 60 first-class matches at an average of 38.82, including eight centuries and 19 fifties.

Ravindra Jadeja Dismissed After Adding Just One Run to Overnight Score

India suffered an early setback on Day 2 of the fourth Test as Ravindra Jadeja was dismissed for 20. The all-rounder was removed by Jofra Archer in the 85th over. Jadeja edged the ball to second slip, where Harry Brook completed a low diving catch.

The slip fielders had moved slightly forward after a couple of earlier edges from Jadeja and Shardul Thakur had fallen short in the same over. Jadeja’s departure also left India five down for 266, ending hopes of a big innings from the in-form batter.

At the time of writing, India were 306/5 with Shardul Thakur and Washington Sundar at the crease. They are the last recognised batting duo for the visitors. Ben Stokes remained England’s most successful bowler so far, having taken two wickets.
