ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Haudenosaunee Confederacy is pushing for inclusion in the 2028 Summer Olympics, with support from New York state lawmakers.

The 2028 Games will mark the first time in over a century that lacrosse, a sport invented by the Haudenosaunee in New York, will be featured.

“Lacrosse is much more than a game to us. It’s who we are, part of our culture and our traditions over the many, many centuries,” said J. Conrad Seneca, president of the Seneca Nation, a member of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy.

Seneca explained that the Haudenosaunee’s inclusion in the Olympics has been a long-standing effort. “Countries that compete in the Olympics have to compete, I believe, in six events. But we’re only competing in the one event in regards to lacrosse, and so we would need a specific waiver in regards to that,” said Seneca.

Sen. George Borrello (R) of the 57th State Senate District has a large Haudenosaunee population in his district. He’s among the state GOP lawmakers advocating for the Haudenosaunee’s Olympic participation.

“They have been competing in the International Lacrosse League as the Haudenosaunee since 1990. So for 35 years. And they’re looking for the same recognition from the International Olympic Committee,” said Borrello.

“I think we do very well,” said Seneca, when asked how he thinks the Haudenosaunee would perform. “I believe right now we’re we’re in that top three category, with United States, Canada and the Haudenosaunee.

Borrello emphasized the bipartisan nature of the effort, noting that a letter has been sent by several members of the New York State-Native American relations committee. “This is a bipartisan effort. There’s also a letter [that] has been sent by several members of the State-Native relations committee that I’m on. So this is a bipartisan, bicameral effort to try to get the native tribes of the Haudenosaunee the recognition that they deserve from the National Olympic Committee,” said Borrello.

News10NBC reached out to the International Olympic Committee for comment, who responded: “Only National Olympic Committees (NOCs) recognised by the IOC can enter teams for the Olympic Games in accordance with the Olympic Charter. This means it is up to the two NOCs concerned (USA and Canada) – in coordination with World Lacrosse and the National Federations concerned – to decide if they include athletes from Haudenosaunee in their respective teams depending on the passport they hold.”

We’ve asked for clarification if they would allow the Haudenosaunee Confederacy to compete under their own flag, we have not gotten a response yet.

Former President Biden also voiced his support for the Haudenosaunee’s inclusion in the Olympics back in 2023.
