Emmerdale confirms former EastEnders villain actor is joining the soap as a mysterious new character

Former EastEnders actor Chris Coghill has joined the cast of Emmerdale as a mysterious new character.

Coghill is well known for playing Tony King, the man who abused Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty) as a child, in the BBC soap from 2008 until 2009.

In the ITV soap, the star is set to play Kev, who arrives in the village looking for directions.

But with no clues yet on who Kev is looking for and why, it remains to be seen whether Coghill will be taking on another villainous role, or if he is portraying a decent soul this time around.

Speaking of the casting, Emmerdale producer Laura Shaw shared: "We are delighted that someone of Chris’s calibre has joined our cast.

"I think the viewers will be intrigued to see how the character of Kev will cause shockwaves this autumn," she added.

"Kev has a strong connection to one of our characters and it’s safe to say his arrival is going to be a massive surprise that will have major repercussions for some of our villagers."

Who is Kev linked to? Could he have any involvement with fellow newcomer Ray (Joe Absolom), who has already made his debut as the latest soap baddie?

Or are we looking in entirely the wrong direction?

While we'll have to wait to find out what kind of person Kev is, Coghill said: "I am really happy to be joining the cast of Emmerdale. Kev is definitely going to shake things up a bit and I’m looking forward to getting cracking!"

As well as EastEnders, the actor's credits include The Bay, Slow Horses and Shameless.

Kev's first appearance on Emmerdale will air in late September.
