New York Senator, Kirsten Gillibrand, introduced a bill called the “Providing Child Care for Police Officers Act.” She says it would establish a $24 million grant program for the next five years to create childcare services for police officers, that will work around their schedules.
“Police officers play a vital role in keeping communities safe, and officers should not have to choose between taking care of their children and staying in the police force,” said Gillibrand.
The bill, co-sponsored by Sen. Thom Tillis and led by Rep. Scott Peters in the House, seeks to improve recruitment, help families manage irregular work hours, and enhance public safety. It proposes grants of up to $3 million for law enforcement agencies to establish childcare programs.
To support smaller departments, 20% of the grant funding is reserved for agencies with fewer than 200 officers. A recent survey highlighted that over 70% of agencies find recruitment harder now than five years ago, with childcare issues causing officers to miss work.
