SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- An elderly man who was struck by an electric scooter while walking in San Francisco on July 18 and later died at the hospital was identified Wednesday.
The man was identified as Peter David Rudolph, 77, of San Francisco, by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Rudolph was walking on Market and Sixth streets in the Tenderloin District just before 4 p.m. when a person on a scooter crashed into him, according to the San Francisco Police Department.
The scooter rider remained at the scene and was cooperative with police, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. No charges against the rider have been announced as of Wednesday.
Hit-and-run driver flees SF fatal pedestrian crash WednesdaySafe streets advocacy group Walk San Francisco said there have been 13 pedestrian-related crashes at the same intersection since 2015. The incident marked the city’s ninth pedestrian death of 2025, according to Walk SF.
“People walking in San Francisco shouldn’t have to worry about being hit by any type of vehicle, whether a car or an e-scooter,” said Walk SF Communications Director Marta Lindsey. “Like motor vehicles, electric micro-mobility devices can accelerate quickly to higher speeds which increases the chances and severity of a crash.”
