‘Strong arguments’ – Chiefs president provides update on $3bn stadium move across state lines

The future of the Kansas City Chiefs remains uncertain.

While the NFL‘s latest dynasty look set to compete in the Super Bowl for years to come, they might soon be on the move from Arrowhead Stadium.

Since 1972, the Chiefs have played at the Truman Sports Complex on the east side of Kansas City, Missouri.

They share the site with the Kansas City Royals of MLB, and both organizations have been offered the opportunity to move away.

Leases with Jackson County are due to expire in 2031, and the teams have been flirting with the idea of relocating to neighboring Kansas.

Arrowhead is in desperate need of major renovations if it is to match the standard of a Super Bowl-dominating Chiefs and their fans, and a funding package has been signed by Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe to help the team do that.

But also on the table is a move across state lines, and the opportunity to build a brand new, $3 billion state-of-the-art domed stadium.

Kansas’ governor signed legislation in June that aimed to lure the Chiefs and Royals away from Jackson County, with the idea of helping them to pay for a new facility by using bonds to cover 70 percent of the cost.

News on any potential relocation has gone quiet in the last month, but Dave Skretta of the Associated Press provided an update on Tuesday.

He reports that the Chiefs are ‘making progress in stadium negotiations’ with lawmakers on both sides of the Kansas-Missouri state line, but it remains unclear if the team will stay at Arrowhead or move elsewhere.

Skretta added that the organization was granted an extension to an end-of-June deadline for the financing package from the state of Kansas, which is an ‘indication’ that the potential move from Missouri is a ‘legitimate possibility’.

The Chiefs and Royals now have until June 30, 2026, to accept state financing for new stadiums, but Reuters reports that the committee is pressing for a decision from the teams by New Year’s Eve.

“Our job, and the team around me, is to get the two best possible partnerships figured out down to the detail,” Mark Donovan, president of the NFL franchise, said on Tuesday.

“At that point we go to the Hunt family and say, ‘Here are the options. What do you want to do?’

“It’s the detail of those deals. What deal makes the most sense from a business perspective, a future perspective?

“What makes the most sense for our fans and the next generation? There are a lot of strong arguments on both sides.”

Donovan also suggested that he is ‘not sure which way it will go’ when it comes to stadiums.

The organization had previously unveiled plans for a proposed multi-million dollar renovation of their current home, while the Royals have said they want to move from Kauffman Stadium, preferably to a new ballpark downtown.

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt has an attachment to Arrowhead, but wants to host a Super BowlGetty

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt has long acknowledged a deep sentimental attachment to Arrowhead, which was built by his father and team founder Lamar Hunt when he moved the franchise from Dallas in 1963.

However, he is also a businessman who understands the importance of the revenue streams generated by a new stadium, and has previously shared his desire for a facility that could host the Super Bowl, Final Four and other big events in future.

How big is the Chiefs current stadium?

While Arrowhead boasts what is regarded as the best fan atmosphere in the NFL, with 76,416 spectators making it an imposing place to play on a Sunday, it is not cut out to host the biggest game of the season.

League commissioner Roger Goodell has made clear his preference to host the Super Bowl in modern or indoor facilities, with State Farm Stadium, Allegiant Stadium and Caesars Superdome the last three venues.

In fact, he has already dangled that carrot to the Cleveland Browns, with the franchise hoping to build a $2.4bn stadium in the suburbs.

As the Chiefs continue negotiations on both sides of Kansas-Missouri state line, their long-term future remains up in the air, and they may soon be forced to pick between their iconic Arrowhead atmosphere and dreams of hosting the Super Bowl.
