Introducing Lumo by Proton

Lumo the privacy-first AI assistant where every conversation is confidential

Proton, the Swiss privacy company behind Proton Mail, Proton VPN, Proton Pass, and Proton Drive, today announces the launch of Lumo, the open-source AI assistant that puts user privacy first. Lumo by Proton allows users to simply type queries into the privacy-first AI assistant — whether that’s summarizing sensitive documents, helping with code, or rewriting their personal emails — safe in the knowledge that every conversation is confidential.

Lumo is Proton’s privacy-first AI assistant that solves problems big or small — from scheduling events, to summarizing documents, to reviewing code Built with privacy, security, and transparency at its heart, Lumo empowers people to benefit from advances in AI without asking for any data in return — a European alternative to Big Tech’s data-hungry AI tools Conversations with Lumo are completely confidential — they’re only readable on the user’s device, they aren’t used to train LLMs, and they can’t be shared with third parties Businesses and consumers can use Lumo safe in the knowledge that their confidential information cannot be tracked or seen by anyone Built to solve AI’s data collection and privacy problem, Lumo is the next step in Proton’s mission to build a better internet, where privacy comes first

AI has the power to tackle humanity’s challenges, big and small, and millions of people are already using it in their work and personal lives. Proton believes the benefits of AI are too great to miss, but the risks too serious to ignore. Hundreds of millions of people are unwittingly handing over sensitive information that is far more intimate than search or browsing history — something businesses aren’t immune to, either. What’s more, the European options for generative AI are limited, with most AI companies being owned and operated out of the USA or China.

That’s why Proton created Lumo, an AI assistant that works for its users, not the other way around. Lumo gives people the power of AI, without demanding any personal data in return. With Lumo, consumers can be confident that their data is fully under their control — never shared, sold or stolen. Chats are stored with Proton’s zero-access encryption, can only be decrypted on the user’s device, aren’t used to train AI models, and can’t be shared with third parties. Lumo is a new kind of generative AI tool built and run in Europe.

Andy Yen, Founder and CEO of Proton, said: “When we first launched Proton Mail a decade ago, our vision was to build a better alternative to Big Tech ecosystems for the benefit of all of society. Big Tech is using AI to supercharge the collection of sensitive user data to accelerate the world’s transition to surveillance capitalism. For this reason, we believe it is essential to provide an alternative that protects privacy and serves users as opposed to exploiting them. AI should not become the world’s most powerful surveillance tool, and our vision for Lumo is AI that puts people ahead of profits.”

Proton has created Lumo around privacy, security, and transparency so that people and businesses don’t have to lose out on the enormous benefits of AI because a private alternative doesn’t exist. Proton can do this because it does not make money from user data. Supported by the community of subscribers, not advertisers, Proton is owned by a Swiss nonprofit, the Proton Foundation, whose mission is to advance online privacy.

Lumo represents one of many investments Proton will be making before the end of the decade to ensure that Europe stays strong, independent, and technologically sovereign. Proton will invest €100 million to help develop a sovereign EuroStack for the future of the continent. Lumo is European and here to serve everybody who cares about privacy and security worldwide.

Proton has built Lumo with privacy, security and transparency as the guiding framework. This means:

No logs: unlike other AI companies that record all conversations on their servers, Lumo doesn’t retain any logs. Chat histories can only be accessed on users’ devices. Zero-access encryption: users’ chats are stored using Proton’s battle-tested zero-access encryption, already trusted by over 100 million Proton users worldwide to secure their data. No data sharing: Proton’s no-logs policy and zero-access encryption mean that Proton cannot share data with third parties, advertisers, or governments. Based in Europe, home to robust privacy protections and outside of US jurisdiction, Proton offers users an extra layer of protection. Not used to train AI: Lumo doesn’t use conversations to train the large language model, and won’t ever expose user data to potentially being used to generate outputs for others’ conversations. This means that people can trust Lumo with confidential and sensitive information both at home and at work. Open: Lumo is powered by open-source large language models that have been optimized by Proton – meaning that users can get the best answer based on the model most capable of dealing with their request – on European servers that Proton controls. Lumo’s code is open-source, meaning that anyone can see it’s secure and does what it claims to.

Lumo is Proton’s latest move towards building a private, European alternative to Big Tech. In the past year, Proton has launched Scribe, an AI writing assistant embedded into end-to-end encrypted Proton Mail, while Proton Docs keeps users’ data fully encrypted, free from data-harvesting from Big Tech.

Proton has added unique features to Lumo that are designed to keep users in control of their data, including:

Web search: To give users maximum privacy, Lumo is set by default not to search the internet to generate replies. However, for users that wish to turn on the web search feature, Lumo will use privacy-friendly search engines to get real-time information. File uploads: Lumo can understand and analyze files, but unlike other AI assistants, Lumo doesn’t keep a record of the data shared, so users can work on sensitive documents with peace of mind. Proton Drive integration: Users can easily add files from their Proton Drive to chats with Lumo. The files stay end-to-end encrypted, meaning users can get help with their docs or PDFs with complete security.

Users can start using Lumo today by visiting lumo.proton.me and typing in a query, or downloading the mobile apps for iOS and Android. Users signed in with a Proton account can view and store their conversations with zero-access encryption — meaning no one, not even Proton, can see their data — on the web, or on mobile apps for Android and iOS. Because Proton doesn’t keep any logs on its servers, no one, not even Proton, can view users’ chat history.

Users can use Lumo for free or upgrade to Lumo Plus for $12.99/month ($9.99/month when billed annually). Lumo Plus enables them to take advantage of premium features, including unlimited chats, extended chat history, unlimited chat favorites and and the ability to upload multiple and large files to Lumo.

    Further information:

Users can get started on lumo.proton.me. There are a number of plans to choose from:

Lumo Free is included for all existing and new users on Proton free and paid plans, including business plans. Lumo Plus ($12.99/month, or $9.99/month when billed annually): users can access advanced features, including unlimited chats, extended encrypted chat history, unlimited favorite chats, and the ability to upload multiple and large files. Lumo Plus is included for those on Proton Visionary plans.

Lumo is available on the web, Android, and iOS.
