A brand-new joint-use soccer field at Wilson Middle School is now complete and set to serve students and families in City Heights.
Students from the Hoover Cluster Schools celebrated the milestone Monday during the “Summer in the Heights” Sports Camp, hosted by Price Philanthropies, Brains & Motion Education (BAM!), and San Diego FC. The summer event offers soccer and volleyball clinics, STEM activities, and lessons in sports-related careers.
The new field is part of the George Walker Smith Education Campus, which includes the recently modernized Central Elementary and Wilson Middle Schools.
“A modern campus means more than classrooms; it means safe places for children to play, for parents to gather, for neighbors to come together and build community,” said Superintendent Dr. Fabiola Bagula of San Diego Unified.
The project marks the 96th joint-use facility developed in partnership between the San Diego Unified School District and the city of San Diego. It includes soccer striping, fencing to separate school and public access areas, and gates. The field will be open to the public after school hours and during school breaks, and also serve Central Elementary students during the school day. Nearby basketball courts, located on top of the Wilson parking structure, will also be available for community use.
“When schools, families, and community partners come together, students thrive,” said Board of Education Vice President Richard Barrera. “These strong partnerships enhance and uplift San Diego Unified’s mission to provide world-class education in the classroom and beyond.”
The soccer field officially opens to the public in August.
