Brewdog has made the “difficult” decision to close 10 of its bars – including its flagship Aberdeen branch.
The business, founded in 2007, said it had not been possible to make the selected locations commercially viable.
It will shut all the bars on July 26 and says staff members who have lost jobs will be redeployed where possible.
A spokesperson for the firm added that it will launch a consultation with affected staff and have one-to-one meetings with those at risk of redundancy.
Which bars are closing?
The company will shut the following bars:
Aberdeen Gallowgate Brighton Camden, London Dundee Leeds North Street Oxford Sheffield Shepherds Bush, London Shoreditch, London YorkJames Taylor, the CEO of the firm, told staff the closures are part of a refresh of its estate, partly in response to “rising costs, increased regulation, and economic pressures” on the sector.
He added that the brand will however still look to grow its bar business, with plans for more larger bars in “destination” locations and to open smaller community bars.
Union hits back
The Unite union, which represents Brewdog staff, has hit out at the decision to give staff “less than four days’ notice” of the closure of their workplace, which it called “morally repugnant” as well as “potentially unlawful”.

A spokesperson for the union said: “This is yet another example of a company that doesn’t have the slightest regard for basic employment law let alone the welfare of their workers.
“We are currently supporting our members across these 10 sites to collectively challenge these redundancies, and we would urge anyone impacted to reach out to us for legal support.”
However, the chain said it is looking to redeploy many of those affected.
It said the ‘process’ will last a minimum of 14 days, there will be one-to-one meetings for every member of staff who is at risk of redundancy and every effort will be made to made to redeploy as many members of staff as possible.
A Brewdog spokesman said: “We can confirm that following a review of our bars business we have made the difficult decision to close 10 bars – which reflects a more focused strategy and a rationalisation of our bar footprint.
“This decision is not simply a response to the challenging UK hospitality market, but a proactive decision to redefine the bar division’s focus for long-term and profitable growth – accounting for ongoing industry challenges, including rising costs, increased regulation, and economic pressures.
“We are working hard to minimise the impact on our people, and we expect to redeploy many affected team members across the Brewdog network. For those leaving the business, we’re providing as much support as possible during this transition.”
Latest in line of controversies at Brewdog
Brewdog has made headlines for several reasons in recent years.
In 2021, ex-workers wrote an open letter about what they said was a “culture of fear” within the business, while later, several ex-Brewdog workers accused founder and former CEO James Watt of inappropriate behaviour in a BBC investigation.
Lawyers for Mr Watt said the allegations were false.
In January 2024 the firm faced a backlash after revealing it would no longer hire new staff on the real living wage and would instead pay the lower legal minimum wage.
Mr Watt stood down as CEO last year. He moved to a position of “captain and co-founder” but retained his shares in the company.
