UTICA, N.Y. — Two former prison guards have been given more time to consider a plea deal in the death of Messiah Nantwi while he was an inmate at Mid-State Correctional Facility.
Investigators say Nantwi died from his injuries after being beaten by guards on March 1 at the prison in Oneida County. Former guards Francis Chandler and David Ferrone appeared in court on Monday on manslaughter charges. They’re due back in court on Aug. 15.
In total, ten guards have been charged in connection with Nantwi’s death, including two charged with murder. Three of them have already pleaded guilty to falsifying records in the investigation into his death.
Nantwi’s death came months after the beating death of Robert Brooks, a Greece man incarcerated at Marcy Correctional Facility, which is across the street from Midstate.
