Bangladesh Air Force Plane Crash Claims 27 Lives

The tragic crash of a Bangladesh Air Force training jet on July 21, 2025, claimed the lives of at least 27 individuals and left numerous others injured. The aircraft, an F-7 BGI jet from China's Chengdu J-7/F-7 family, experienced technical difficulties shortly after take-off from Dhaka. In a commendable effort to avert disaster in densely populated areas, the pilot attempted to redirect the plane but ultimately crashed into Milestone School and College in Uttara . This incident highlights the critical need for rigorous safety protocols and maintenance checks within military aviation operations.

The F-7 BGI aircraft crashed soon after it took off at 1:06 p.m. (0706 GMT) on Monday from the airbase in Kurmitola in the capital on a routine training mission. The military said the plane experienced a mechanical failure.

Footage from the school in a northern suburb of the capital, Dhaka shows a huge fire and thick smoke, after the aircraft slammed into a two-storey building.

More than 170 people were injured in the crash.

The armed forces said that the F-7 jet had experienced a mechanical fault after taking off for a training exercise just after 13:00 local time (07:00 GMT). The pilot, Flight Lieutenant Md. Taukir Islam, was among those killed.

Twenty bodies have been handed over to their families. Some of the charred bodies were beyond recognition and they might need DNA tests for matching. A blood donation camp has been opened at a specialized burn hospital where most of the injured were being treated.

Students said the school’s buildings trembled violently, followed by a big explosion that sent them running for safety. A desperate scene soon unfolded at the crash site, as panicked relatives searched for loved ones. Screams filled the air at a nearby hospital.

The Milestone school is in Dhaka’s Uttara neighborhood, about an 11-kilometer (7-mile) drive from the A.K. Khandaker air force base. The school is in a densely populated area near a metro station and numerous shops and homes.

The aftermath of the crash was devastating; initial reports indicated that at least 19 fatalities occurred along with over 164 injuries . The impact caused a significant fire that engulfed parts of the school campus. Eyewitness accounts described chaotic scenes as emergency services rushed to extinguish flames and rescue those trapped in debris . As investigations proceed into this calamity, it raises important questions about pilot training and aircraft reliability within military frameworks.
