Chicago Public Schools’ inspector general has substantiated allegations of inappropriate communication and conduct involving former sociology teacher, Dennis Kass, according to a letter dated July 16.
Kass is one of seven teachers or administrators who have either resigned, been fired or left Little Village Lawndale High School amid allegations of misconduct since 2017.
A months-long investigation by NBC 5 Investigates called “Lessons in Betrayal” detailed the allegations of former students who said they felt they were groomed by Kass and other educators into sexual relationships.
In most cases, the students said that the educators communicated with them via Facebook messenger or text while they were still in high school, but that the sex happened after they turned 18 or in the days, weeks or months after graduation.
In Illinois, teachers can certainly lose their jobs for having sex with students, but it is not considered a crime if the student is 18 and consents.
Kass has not been criminally charged in connection with the inspector general’s investigation.
NBC 5 Investigates reached out to Kass and his attorney Monday afternoon. We will update our reporting if we get a response.
The letter, sent to a former student we interviewed, states: “… As you know, an investigation was conducted by the Office of Inspector General regarding allegations against that, Dennis Kass, a teacher, was engaged in a variety of inappropriate communications and conduct with students. The investigation is now concluded, and the allegations have been substantiated. This letter is to inform you that Dennis Kass is no longer employed with the board and is ineligible for future employment in the district…”
As part of our reporting, NBC 5 Investigates interviewed 12 former students who alleged they either witnessed, were approached or were groomed into sexual relationships with various teachers or administrators at Little Village Lawndale High School. The students all graduated between 2009 and 2019.
Earlier this month, a Cook County jury convicted former dean of discipline Brian Crowder of aggravated sexual assault for having sex with a then-15-year-old student. Crowder is the only educator referenced in our reporting who’s been criminally charged.
Ana Solano, one of the former students we interviewed who said she formed a sexual relationship with Kass several months after graduating, told NBC 5 Investigates she was glad Kass is no longer employed at CPS but thinks the district could have done more.
The CPS inspector general took nearly three years to complete its investigation into the allegations of teacher-on-student misconduct at Little Village Lawndale High School. NBC 5 Investigates has filed a public records request seeking a copy. The final report, we were told, was completed on or about June 30. We are still waiting on a copy.
