30 Rock actor and former Saturday Night Live writer John Lutz shared that his younger brother, Joel, has died.
People magazine reported that Lutz took to his Instagram account on July 20 to share the heartbreaking news with his followers. featured several pictures of Lutz with his brother.
"My younger brother Joel passed away suddenly this past Thursday. My family and I are heartbroken. He was a funny, compassionate, and loving person. There are so many other things that I want to say about him, but right now I am too devastated to continue typing. I love you Joel," read the caption of the post.
According to People magazine, Lutz also shared a GoFundMe fundraiser for "funeral costs" and to help support his brother's wife and four children following his passing. According to the fundraiser's page, Joel was "born in 1975," religious, and "a successful electrical engineer working for automobile companies around the world."
Lutz played Johnny "J. D." Lutz, a writer at the fictional sketch comedy show TGS, based on SNL, on 30 Rock during the show's seven seasons. He noted that he also worked as a writer for SNL for five years until 2005 during a 2021 interview with Awards Radar. Lutz explained that he had a busy schedule while he was working on both SNL and 30 Rock. According to Lutz, he would pull "an all-night writing" session for SNL and then immediately have to travel to film 30 Rock. After finishing his 30 Rock scenes, he would have to "go back to SNL for a table read."
"I was just going back and forth. There was times where I wouldn't sleep for two and a half days straight, going back and forth between the two," said the writer.
Lutz also said that the similarities between the SNL writers' room and the 30 Rock set caused him to feel some confusion.
"It screwed with my mind," said Lutz.
