Building the Band — Netflix's newest competition series that sees "solo singers collide to form six new groups, each chasing one shot at stardom" — is making waves as we speak, and on Thursday (July 17), the bands performed for a live audience for the first time since the show dropped.
Needless to say, attendees at Netflix Summer Break were in for quite the treat!
For those who are unfamiliar with the show, according to Netflix, "in the initial phase of the first-of-its-kind music competition, participants took part in blind auditions, listening to one another sing from their individual sound booths." Now with all six bands finally formed, "they’ll move from the booths into shared apartments and put everything they have into vocal coaching, crafting a cohesive group image and more."
Nevertheless, the six bands are as follows:
SZN 4: Aaliyah Rose, Cameron Goode, Donzell Taggart and Katie RoederSoulidified: Bradley Rittman, Landon Boyce, Malik Heard and Shade Jenifer3QUENCY: Brianna Mazzola, Nori Royale and Wennely QuezadaMidnight ’Til Morning: Conor Smith, Mason Watts, Shane Appell and Zach NewbouldSiren Society: Autumn Stallia, Erica Padilla, Jenna Dave and Noriella GjileliSweet Seduction: Alison Ogden, Elise Kristine and Haley GosserandWith seven episodes of the competition series in the books, Netflix left Building the Band fans on a major cliffhanger, with SZN 4, Soulidified, 3QUENCY and Sweet Seduction advancing in the competition, while Midnight ’Til Morning and Siren Society remain in jeopardy. The final band advancing in the competition will be revealed when the final batch of Building the Band episodes drops on Wednesday (July 23).
Although they might have moved on in the competition, the groups are far from perfect, though, with one band in particular receiving a great deal of backlash after their Netflix Summer Break performance: 3QUENCY.

(Photo by Roger Kisby/Getty Images for Netflix)Eager to form a "sisterhood," 3QUENCY members Brianna and Wennely bonded right off the bat — actually having met at an audition years prior — eventually looping in Nori after she and Wennely had a positive chat with one another. With a strong threesome, the girls debated adding a fourth member to the group, Bri Gilyard, however, they ultimately decided to remain a trio instead, resulting in the name 3QUENCY.
Singing “Levitating” by Dua Lipa in episode 4 — marking the moment they met in-person for the first time — 3QUENCY sang SZA’s “Kill Bill” in episode 6 and Muni Long's “Made for Me” in episode 7. Then, Brianna, Nori and Wennely reprised the latter performance at Netflix Summer Break, but one band member seemingly fell short: Nori.

♬ original sound - zoe carlowAs mentioned, Netflix Summer Break took place at Santa Monica Pier on Thursday, "gathering familiar faces from beloved series, including Love Is Blind, Selling Sunset, Squid Game: The Challenge, Perfect Match, Temptation Island, and many, many more" to celebrate "a slate of new series and seasons of your favorite shows" (according to Netflix).
In addition to Love on the Spectrum’s Abbey Romeo singing her smash hit, “Boyfriend Forever,” the event featured "performances from four of the newly formed bands on Building the Band — Midnight ’Til Morning, Soulidified, 3QUENCY, and SZN 4," as well as a surprise appearance from special guest Muni Long herself. How cool is that?
Despite coming out looking like a real girl group — rocking coordinated leather outfits with flashy gold chains — Nori's vocals fell flat in the performance, ultimately receiving a great deal of backlash from Building the Band fans. "I can’t stand Nori’s voice," one viewer wrote, while another added, "Nori gives more solo vibes. She doesn’t blend with this group."
A third commented, "Nori’s voice does not blend with them, all I can hear is her," while a fourth added, "Choosing Nori over Bri was an epic nasal failure." Yikes...
With the group seemingly having a weak link, will 3QUENCY have what it takes to win Building the Band? Catch Netflix's third batch of episodes — including the finale of the series — when it hits the streaming service on Wednesday.
Needless to say, we are on the edge of our seats!
