A rarely heard interview with late pop icon Connie Francis has resurfaced following her death last week at age 87.
In the conversation with Joe Sibilia, originally recorded in 2017 at Hofstra University’s WRHU-FM and rebroadcast over the weekend on AM 970 The Answer’s Nostalgia Tonight, Francis shared a deeply personal revelation about her former flame, Bobby Darin.
Francis recalled the moment she discovered decades-old letters she wrote to Darin being sold on eBay.
“All of my love letters that Bobby had kept were for sale on eBay,” Francis told Sibilia. “And so I told my assistant, ‘Make sure that you get all of these letters that I wrote to Bobby, and no matter what the price.’”
Although she was initially outbid, Francis said she was eventually able to track down the winning buyer — a woman who had a private arrangement with eBay to acquire Darin memorabilia.
“She was very sweet,” Francis recalled. “She gave me all the original letters back that I had written to Bobby. And she made a copy of them, and she gave me all the original letters back.”
Reading them again decades later, Francis said, “It was like such a view into who I was at that time. I mean, I was so naive, and I was so ingenuous, you know, it was interesting to read about and of course Bobby’s letters were great. I kept them through the years."
She later recalled the moment she and Darin first met.
“He came into my office to play me some songs,” she explained, describing one song in particular, “My First Real Love,” as being “a terrible song.”
But clearly, the two had hit it off — despite her father’s approval.
Describing the relationship with her father (who was also her manager) as a “combustible relationship,” Francis spoke candidly about how his disapproval had prevented her from marrying Darin.
When asked by Sibilia whether she would have married the singer if her father had approved, Francis answered simply: “Yes.”
