Georgia offensive lineman Jahzare Jackson made headlines for the wrong reasons over the weekend.
Athens-Clarke County records show that Jackson was booked at 11:50 p.m. Wednesday on 4 charges, including felony possession of marijuana, more than 1 ounce. He was also charged with possession of marijuana less than 1 ounce, possession of drug-related objects and physically holding a wireless device while driving. He was released on Thursday morning after posting bond totaling $5,030.
Marc Weiszer of the Athens Banner-Herald received a statement from Georgia athletics on Monday:
We are aware of the report and will provide no further comment at this time.
Weiszer reported further details from Jackson’s arrest. The drug-related objects charge was for a marijuana grinder found during the search of Jackson’s vehicle, a 2017 Tesla. The wireless device charge was for Jackson holding his cell phone while driving. Jackson was arrested at 9:31 p.m. at West Broad Street/Hawthorne Ave. in Athens.
The 6-10, 348-pound Jackson is entering his second season at Georgia. He had a unique path to UGA.
Originally from San Diego, Jackson prepped at Overtime Elite, an Atlanta-based basketball program. Before joining Kirby Smart‘s program, Jackson had last played competitive football in middle school.
Jackson appeared in 14 games as a reserve offensive lineman last season.
