Five people died after three vehicles collided on state Route 67 in Poway, sparking a half-acre brush fire Friday afternoon, sheriff’s officials said.

Saleem Payman said in a news release.
Deputies arrived to find one of the vehicles had crashed into a ravine, causing a fire, Payman said.
Five people from the three vehicles were killed, officials said. No other motorists were injured, Poway Fire officials said.

Cal Fire called in air and ground crews to fight the fire, which grew to about a half-acre, Capt. Thomas Shoots said. He said it was doused and completely contained.
SR-67 was closed between Scripps Poway Parkway and Poway Road, and remained closed into the evening. Shortly before 8 p.m., the city of Poway said on social media that the highway had been reopened.
The sheriff’s Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team responded and assisted with the investigation, and deputies collected video footage that could help determine the cause of the crash.
