John Oliver Responds to ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ Cancellation: “A Huge Loss for Comedy”

“This is really awful news for the comedy community. Late-night shows have always meant a lot to me—not just, because I work in them, but even growing up in England, I watched [David] Letterman’s show, which Stephen now hosts, and I admired how exciting that world seemed. Being on both Letterman’s and Stephen’s shows has been some of the most enjoyable experiences of my career, so this is incredibly sad to hear. Still, I’m eager to see what Stephen does next because he’s someone who never quits,” he added.

Oliver has made several appearances on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, as well as on the earlier version hosted by David Letterman back in 2015.

He is the most recent comedian and TV host to express his support, joining others like Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers, Andy Cohen, and even Anderson Cooper who have also shared their reactions.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will end after the 2025-2026 season, with its last episode scheduled for May 2026. This gives Colbert many opportunities to experiment and express himself more openly without typical constraints.

CBS decided to cancel Colbert’s long-running show shortly after he publicly criticized Paramount, the network’s parent company, accusing them on air of paying a “big fat bribe” to resolve President Donald Trump’s lawsuit.

Paramount settled the $16 million lawsuit after Trump claimed the network edited a 60 Minutes interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris to make her look better.

The decision sparked surprise throughout the industry and among Democratic politicians, who worried that political pressure was behind the dismissal of one of late night’s most beloved hosts.

In short, Oliver, who has criticized his own network’s previous parent company in several segments, described the cancellation of The Late Show as “incredibly sad.”I love Stephen, I love his team. I love that show,” said the English-American comedian, who, by February this year, had been the most frequent guest on Colbert’s program, according to Colbert.
