Scottie Scheffler claimed Open glory at Royal Portrush on Sunday evening and dedicated his brilliant win to his wife Meredith.
The world number one delivered a superb performance in Northern Ireland to win his fourth major title by four strokes.
Once his final putt went in on the 18th, Scheffler celebrated with his family, including his wife Meredith and young son Bennett.
He has now added The Open to his two Masters titles and one PGA Championship, becoming the 31st player in history to win four majors.
By adding the Claret Jug to his collection, he is just a US Open victory away from becoming the seventh man in history to complete the Career Grand Slam.
The 29-year-old started Sunday’s final round at Portrush at 14-under-par and with a four-shot lead, which he immediately extended with a birdie on the first hole.
His closest challenger, China’s Haotong Li was partnered with Scheffler as they set off on Sunday afternoon, but he couldn’t live with the 22-time PGA Tour winner.
Scheffler extended his lead over the chasing pack to seven, though a double bogey on the eighth brought those chasing behind briefly back into it.
However, they could never quite close the gap, and in the end, Scheffler claimed victory with a final score of -17, four ahead of compatriot Harris English.
Scheffler will now hope to follow in Rory McIlroy‘s footsteps and claim the Grand Slam next summer and will have a great chance of doing so at the 2026 US Open at Shinnecock Hills.
He said: “It’s a very special feeling.
“It takes a lot of work to get to this point in my career. This was a tough week – it was challenging. The course was playing really tough. I had to focus very hard over the course of the weekend.
Scheffler just needs to win the US Open to get the career Slam – with the final day of the 2026 championship happening on his 30th birthdayAFP“This one was different from the PGA (in May) because I had a decent lead to start the day. At the PGA, I felt like I struggled on the front nine and then was able to push forward and win it on the back nine.
“This one, I felt like I built up a lead. It got a little close there after the double bogey on eight but as I bounced back at nine I was able to keep a pretty sizeable lead for most of the day.”
Before he’d taken a tee shot this week, Scheffler questioned what the point of winning was when any joy was only ever fleeting.
He even indicated he would quit if the sport ever had an impact on his family life.
So, you could have been forgiven for thinking that his mind might not be in the right place or that he would struggle, but that couldn’t have been further from the truth.
On a opening day, impacted by weather and delays, Scheffler recorded an impressive score of 68, three under par.
Day two saw him go to another level as he recorded a stunning round of 64, including eight birdies.
And he further extended that lead on Saturday’s moving day with a fine score of 67 to put himself in prime position.
And given he’s never lost a lead after three rounds at a major, the signs were ominous.
He added: “Every time I’m able to win a tournament the first person I look for is my wife Meredith.
“I didn’t see her at first but then I saw my dad and saw Meredith and she’s always the first person I want to celebrate with.
“She knows me better than anyone, she’s my best friend. I wouldn’t be able to do it without her support. It’s not a lifestyle that’s suited to everybody, but we’re very grateful. It’s fun – being able to celebrate tournaments like this.

Scheffler won by four shots in the endGetty“To be able to win The Open at Portrush is a feeling that’s hard to describe.
“I grew up a kid in Texas that wanted to play professional golf. I don’t know why I’m so lucky that I get to live out those dreams. It’s something I’m very grateful for and if someone’s going to listen to those comments this week, I’d encourage them to listen to all of it.
“It’s amazing to win The Open but having success in life, whether it’s work or golf, is not what fulfils the deepest desires of your heart. This is a cool feeling and I can’t wait to get home and celebrate with the people that have helped me along the way. It’s just tough to describe when you haven’t lived it.
“Just because you win a golf tournament doesn’t make you happy – there’s more to life than playing golf. But I’m pretty excited to celebrate this one.”
English, who came second to Scheffler at the PGA Championship in May, was runner-up again at 13-under with recent Scottish Open champion Chris Gotterup a further shot back.
Home favourite Rory McIlroy ended on 10-under in a tie for seventh alongside Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre and defending champion Xander Schauffele.

The Irishman believes Scheffler is now doing Tiger Woods things.
Speaking to talkSPORT 2, he said: “If Scottie’s feet stayed stable, we’d be talking about him in the same way as Tiger Woods.
“I just think because it doesn’t look so perfect, we don’t talk about him like that.
“I think he’s just incredible to watch, and his bad shots are really good, and that is when you know he’s really good.”
English made a similar statement while admitting his frustration at behind runner-up to Scheffler again.
“Lost to Scottie twice in two majors, the only guy to beat me at the PGA and this week,” the 35-year-old said of his fellow American.
“I wasn’t playing professional golf when Tiger (Woods) was at his peak, early 2000s, mid 2000s, but it’s pretty incredible just how good of a front-runner he is.
“He’s improved his putting. There’s no stat that he’s bad in. It’s like, how do you beat this guy?
“But he works so hard, and I see him in the gym all the time, see him practising. He’s one of the hardest workers I’ve ever seen and to have the number one in the world working that hard just makes it that much harder to catch him.
“I’m playing some good golf. Just need to clean it up a little bit.
“My two goals this year were to make it to the Tour Championship and make that Ryder Cup team and hopefully I’ve moved myself a little bit closer to that and I can get in that top six (of automatic selections) to lock up a spot.”
