Police has released photos of a man suspected of shooting the 29-year-old motorist accused of intentionally driving into a crowd outside an East Hollywood nightclub, injuring dozens of people.
The incident unfolded in the 4600 block of Santa Monica Boulevard, near a popular venue in the 1000 block of North Vermont Avenue, according to investigators with the L.A. Police Department.
Over 120 first responders responded to the mass-casualty event, transporting 36 individuals to the hospital with injuries that ranged from minor wounds to serious fractures. Several victims have been trapped underneath the suspect's vehicle. According to officials, at least seven of those injured were in critical condition.
Right after the crash, bystanders pulled the driver—identified by police as Fernando Ramirez—from his vehicle and assaulted him with punches and kicks.
“During the altercation, an unidentified male approached from across the street, produced a firearm and shot Ramirez once in the lower back,” L.A. police stated in an updated news release. “That suspect fled the location and remains at large.”
Bystanders recorded video footage of the disorderly scene following the ramming incident. The footage shows police officers and firefighters arriving at the location, providing aid to the injured and transporting victims to ambulances. Altogether, 124 firefighters are dispatched to handle the emergency.
