Belgium’s King Philippe has denounced theinternational response to the war in Gaza, calling the worsening humanitariansituation “a disgrace to humanity” and demanding an immediate ceasefire.
In his annual address ahead of Belgium’s National Day,the monarch voiced rare political criticism, warning that the continuedsuffering of civilians in Gaza cannot be ignored. “In Gaza, innocent people aredying of hunger and falling under bombs, suffocated in their enclaves…Thecurrent situation has gone on far too long.”
Citing the erosion of global norms, King Philippewarned that neglecting international law in such conflicts risks fuelingfurther instability.
The speech came as the UN human rights office reportedthat at least 674 civilians have been killed near aid distribution sites inGaza as of July 13. The enclave’s overall death toll, according to the HealthMinistry’s figure, surpassed 58,800 and continues to climb amid widespreadfamine, displacement, and bombardment.
Despite increasing evidence from internationalorganizations alleging Israeli violations of international law, including warcrimes, the European Union has refrained from imposing sanctions. On July 15,EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas described the situation in Gaza as“catastrophic” but did not propose concrete measures.
In Belgium, Prime Minister Bart De Wever has said hewould not rule out sanctions, but emphasized the need for any action to followEU consensus. Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot, however, has publicly called forthe suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement—though he was notofficially mandated to take that position.
A Brussels court on July 18 ordered the Flemishregional government to block a shipment of dual-use goods bound for Israel andto halt any future military exports. The court found that Flemish authoritieshad repeatedly violated their obligations under the Genocide Convention andimposed fines for noncompliance.
