Tsunami Threat Ends Following Series of Powerful Earthquakes off Russias Pacific Coast

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says there was no longer a danger of tsunami waves on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula after five powerful quakes — the largest with a magnitude of 7.4 — struck in the sea nearby.

Three earthquakes, one with a magnitude of 7.4, the largest quake was at a depth of 20 kilometers (12 miles) and was 144 kilometers (89 miles) recorded near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, capital of Russia’s Kamchatka region.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) stated that there is no longer a danger of tsunami waves on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula after three earthquakes – the larger with a magnitude of 7.4 – struck in the sea nearby.

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is located in the Kamchatka region, facing the Pacific, northeast of Japan and west of the US state of Alaska, across the Bering Sea.

The Kamchatka Peninsula has been the meeting point of the Pacific and North American tectonic plates, making it a seismic hot zone. Since 1900, seven major earthquakes of magnitude 8.3 or higher have struck the area.

The PTWC initially stated that there is a danger of major tsunami waves but later downgraded its warning before finally saying the danger had passed.

Russia’s Emergencies Ministry issued a tsunami alert after the strongest earthquake, advising people in coastal areas to keep away from the shoreline.

At the time, there were no reports of injuries or destruction, and the ministry stated there were no current plans for evacuation.

To sum up, Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry stated on Telegram that waves as high as 60 centimeters are anticipated in the Commander Islands, located in the southwestern Bering Sea, while the Kamchatka Peninsula could see waves ranging from 15 to 40 centimeters.
