TSUNAMI alerts have been issued following two powerful earthquakes in the Pacific.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has place Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula under official tsunami threat following 7.4 and 6.7 magnitude earthquakes.
The 7.4 quake hit off the east coast of Kamchatka, Russia, on Saturday evening and there is now danger of a powerful wave smashing into the peninsula.
The epicentre was around 89 miles east of the Russian city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, with a population of 180,000, and 12 miles below the seabed.
The slightly smaller 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck just minutes earlier in a similar area.
There were fears Hawaii would also be impacted, but an island-wide tsunami warning has now been withdrawn.
The USGS warned that “hazardous tsunami waves are possible” within 300 kilometres of the epicentre in the Pacific.
