ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Dan Mason, the General Manager of the Rochester Red Wings, is set to be inducted into the Red Wings Hall of Fame on Aug. 16. Mason’s journey with the team began as an intern, and he quickly realized his passion for the role.
“Oh boy, when I started as an intern, after a few months, I realized this is something I think I could do,” Mason said.
Mason’s innovative ideas and dedication to enhancing the fan experience led to his rapid rise within the organization.
“I said to our then General Manager Dan Lunetta, I said, hey I think we need to do some other things to get people to come to the ballpark,” Mason said.
Mason’s efforts were well-received, eventually earning him a promotion to General Manager. Despite his success, Mason still feels the excitement of Opening Day.
“I still get butterflies on Opening Day every year, but your first one as the GM, it’s a little bit more. Butterflies were on overload that day,” Mason said.
Mason’s role extends beyond the title of General Manager.
“My job title is General Manager, but it’s really Director of Fun. That’s why we’re here,” Mason said. “Our job as an organization is to make sure that we create memories for our fans and make sure people have a great time.”
Throughout his career, Mason has cherished many memorable moments, including the last game at Silver Stadium.
“I’ll never forget that final night. I think that is one of the most proud I’ve ever been of the people that I’ve worked with. Saying goodbye and trying to encapsulate 68 years of memories into three hours is a very daunting task,” Mason said.
Mason also fondly recalled winning the Governor’s Cup in 1997.
“Winning is fun, so winning the Governor’s Cup in 1997, I could not have written a better script for our first season here at Innovative Field,” Mason said.
Beyond baseball, Mason has helped make Innovative Field a community staple.
“There’s a lot of reasons why people love Innovative Field and why it’s become such a staple in our community. And it’s more than just baseball. It’s charity walks or runs or concerts, or you name it,” Mason said.
Mason’s commitment to the Red Wings and the community has been unwavering.
“After about two or three years, I realized a lot of my other friends were moving on to either other careers or other cities and other teams and I just kind of realized then I loved working for the Red Wings and I felt like this is where I fit in the best,” Mason said.
As Mason prepares for his Hall of Fame induction, he remains humble and enthusiastic about the future.
“This is a very humbling and incredible honor and I’m very grateful. I feel really weird about it to be honest with you. But I got a lot left in the tank and I’m not planning on going anywhere anytime soon,” Mason said.
