When a massive fire nearly derailed one of the world’s biggest EDM festivals, Metallica’s quick thinking saved the day.
Tomorrowland, the beloved music festival that takes place in Belgium, was just hours away from kicking off its weekend festivities on Wednesday, July 16, when a fire tore through the main stage, severely damaging it. With sets from top EDM acts like Swedish House Mafia, David Guetta, and more on the line, the situation seemed dire. But thanks to the ‘80s legends, the festival went on without a hitch.
Thankfully Metallica, who is currently on their M72 World Tour, had their stage set stored nearby in Austria. The iconic rockers quickly made arrangements to have the stage flown overnight to Belgium, allowing the festival to go on as planned.
Martin Garrix, who is set to perform July 19, took to Instagram to express his gratitude for the band, writing, “I can not believe I’m actually typing this… but my set at Tomorrowland is still happening! massive love and a big shoutout to the incredible @tomorrowland team for pulling off miracles — and to @Metallica for coming through with the new stage parts.” The caption accompanied a photo of him and Metallica drummer, Lars Ulrich. The band responded by leaving a simple black heart emoji in the comments.

Fans gushed over the band’s heroic move in the comments, with one fan writing, “Makes me so proud to be a Raver AND a Metalhead.”
Another stated, “Desperate times call for LEGENDARY MEASURES .”
Others wished for a collaboration between the two, with one saying, “I’m praying to see garrix x metallica collab one day,” while another commented, “now I’ll be dreaming with a collab.”
After the fire was put out Wednesday, Tomorrowland spokesperson Debby Wilmsen acknowledged the setback, saying per Rolling Stone, “Years of love and passion have gone into building that stage. Those teams are devastated. Tomorrow, 38,000 festival-goers will arrive, we’re really looking forward to that, and we’re going to give them a warm welcome. We’re going to make it a wonderful festival.”

Wilmsen, awestruck, told DJ Mag on Friday, July 18, “It is a miracle and we are beyond happy to be opening. Two hours ago we were still demolishing the old stage.”
Tomorrowland will be taking place for two weekends on July 18-20 and July 25-27.
