‘It’s the worst thing that could’ve happened’: LGBTQ+ youth counseling services cut from 988 Suicide Crisis Lifeline

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Trump administration has cut counseling services for LGBTQ-plus youth through the 988 Suicide Crisis Lifeline, sparking concern in the local community. People are worried this decision will reduce access to mental health care for this vulnerable population.

Previously, individuals seeking these services could dial 988 and press option 3 for help. Now, option 3 is no longer available.

“It’s the worst thing that could’ve happened. It’s a suicide line, it’s not a I’m feeling bad line,” Ann said.

The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, launched in July 2022, has handled more than 16 million texts, chats, and calls over three years, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Ann, who identifies as non-binary, said the demand for these services is growing.

“I can scream from the top of my lungs that what you are doing is going to affect us all,” Ann said.

Ann shared her personal experience of needing help and not having dedicated support. “Was I going to follow through or was I going to find something else. I’m lucky the method that I had chosen made me drowsier than I expected. So I am here today because I fell asleep,” she said.

Ann emphasized that if not for that, she would have become another statistic, something she hopes LGBTQ-plus youth can avoid despite the cuts to the 988 line.

“Fifty percent of non-binary trans people completed or attempted suicide in the last year. Fifty percent that’s not a small number,” Ann said. “Those are my friends I have lost quite a few. And it’s hard to keep fighting every day,” Ann said.
