Neighbors caught in crossfire before police kill Gastonia man who came from a dark corner

GASTONIA, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- One man is dead after police say he started shooting at them overnight in a Gastonia neighborhood.

Terrified neighbors say they were caught in the crossfire.

While police swarmed Hickory Hollow Road in Gastonia, a neighbor woke up to bullets slicing through her home.

She believes a bullet came through the wall and sailed right over her head, lodging into a wall on the other side of the room.

Another bullet went through her bedroom wall, hitting the back of her furniture, landing in a drawer, and another smashed through her living room window.

While she hit the floor, another neighbor, Matthew Yandle, got a knock on his door telling him to take cover.

“They came to our door and asked us to seek shelter because we were in the line of fire,” said Yandle.

Matthew Yandle lives on Hickory Hollow Road.

The barrage of bullets was coming from the home across the street.

About an hour and a half before the deadly shootout, Gastonia Police had received a call around 10:30 Thursday night about an assault.

A family member met police outside and said 39-year-old Jeremy Jackson Bonham was in the house alone, he had a gun, and he had fired a shot.

“Officers were taking defensive positions around the house,” said Yandle.

Yandle says a police sniper used Yandle’s pickup truck, put down his tailgate, hopped in and moved cinderblocks to set up his shot.

While police were in a standoff with the suspect, they say he snuck up on them outside the house.

“He came from a very dark corner of the back and fired upon the officers, and they returned fire,” said Gastonia Police Chief Trent Conard at a news conference Friday morning.

The police chief says 10 officers fired their weapons, killing Bonham.

“Best neighbor you can ask for,” said Yandle of Bonham.

Yandle says Bonham was a veteran and he believes he was working as a security guard until he got injured and hasn’t been able to do the job.

“Private, kept to himself, came over and helped me cut my lawn, we went shooting on a regular basis, he’s an enthusiast for service rifles from World War II, good guy,” said Yandle.

It’s a tragic ending that has shaken the neighborhood.

“This would not be anything I would have ever expected of anyone in this area, said Yandle.

Investigators say Bonham was alone when officers arrived to the home, but county officials say the initial 911 call was made by a minor.

Queen City News has requested that call, but it is not being made public record.

No police officers were hurt in the incident.

As is protocol, all 10 of the officers who fired their weapons are now on paid administrative leave pending an investigation. The incident is under investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation.
