CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- The filing period is over for those looking to run for a seat on Charlotte’s City Council. That means the field, at least for the primaries, is set.
Every incumbent on the council filed for re-election, and most face challenges from either fellow Democrats or Republicans.
For the top office, Vi Lyles is seeking a fifth term as Charlotte’s Mayor.
RELATED: Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles announces bid for re-election“We are never going to give up on affordable housing and opportunities for people to have a place to live. We’re never going to give up on trying the idea of how do we have a safe community,” she told reporters on Wednesday.
Lyles will face four democratic challengers. The lone Republican who filed is Mecklenburg County GOP-backed Terrie Donovan, a Charlotte real estate agent.
“We need more accountability. We need more transparency. And the crime rate is just out of control. So we need change,” said Donovan.
District 3 representative Tiawana Brown, who is facing federal fraud charges, has three democratic challengers and a Republican, James Bowers. Two Republicans and a Democrat are running for District 6, a seat that was vacated after Tariq Bokhari left to join the Trump Administration. Krista, his wife, has the GOP’s endorsement.

The Charlotte primary is set for September 9. The general election is on November 4.
