A fire involving a shed and pallets of hand sanitizer that began shortly after 8:30 p.m. Thursday continues to burn Friday morning because it’s too dangerous to put out.
The blaze that erupted on the 5400 block of South Avalon Boulevard in the South Park area of Los Angeles “is being allowed to burn off in a controlled manner due to the high alcohol content of the hand sanitizer,” the LA Fire Department reported.
“Water cannot be used safely in these conditions, as alcohol can float on water and spread flames,” the LAFD said in an alert message.
Instead, firefighters are using “large quantities” of fire-surpressing foam and building dams out of sand to keep the runoff from entering storm drains.
A total of 66 firefighters responded to the scene, including HazMat specialists from LAFD. LADWP workers responded to deal with downed power lines, and LAPD, the Los Angeles Department of Transportation and LA Street Services were also on scene.
