4 things to know about the Trump-Epstein ‘birthday card’ before forming an opinion

Donald Trump reportedly helped celebrate Jeffrey Epstein’s 50th birthday with a greeting accompanied by a hand-drawn image of a naked woman.

A report in The Wall Street Journal claimed to reveal new details about the relationship between the US president and the convicted sex offender, who was accused of sexually abusing dozens of minors before he was found dead in his jail cell in 2019.

Reuters could not immediately confirm the authenticity of the letter.

Trump strongly denied ever writing the letter and described it as fake news.

Trump responded to the story on his Truth Social platform, saying he would sue the newspaper and Rupert Murdoch, who controls the Journal’s publisher, News Corp.

Here, The i Paper takes a look at what you need to know about the letter and the resulting fall-out.

Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s former girlfriend, reportedly collected letters from Trump and dozens of Epstein’s other alleged associates for a 2003 birthday album.

Pages from the album, assembled before Epstein’s first arrest in 2006, are among documents scrutinised by Justice Department officials who investigated Maxwell and Epstein years ago, The Wall Street Journal reported.

These so-called “Epstein files” allegedly contain a letter bearing Trump’s name that contains several lines of typewritten text framed by the outline of a naked woman, which appears to be hand-drawn with a heavy marker.

A pair of small arcs denotes the woman’s breasts, and the signature is a squiggly “Donald” below her waist, drawn to mimic pubic hair.

The alleged letter has Donald referring to Epstein as a “pal” and suggests a closer relationship than what was previously known about their association.

Inside the outline of the naked woman was the following typewritten note.

“Voice Over: There must be more to life than having everything.

Donald: Yes, there is, but I won’t tell you what it is.

Jeffrey: Nor will I, since I also know what it is.

Donald: We have certain things in common, Jeffrey.

Jeffrey: Yes, we do, come to think of it.

Donald: Enigmas never age, have you noticed that?

Jeffrey: As a matter of fact, it was clear to me the last time I saw you.

Trump: A pal is a wonderful thing. Happy Birthday — and may every day be another wonderful secret.“

    2. Trump said the letter is fake

Trump denied any association with the letter.

He told The Wall Street Journal: “This is not me. This is a fake thing. It’s a fake Wall Street Journal story.”

He added that “I don’t draw picture of women” and that it “it wasn’t my language”.

He claimed on his Truth Social account that the newspaper printed a “false, malicious, and defamatory story” and said he instructed Attorney General Pam Bondi to “produce any and all pertinent Grand Jury testimony” related to the case, “subject to Court approval”.

“The Wall Street Journal, and Rupert Murdoch, personally, were warned directly by President Donald J. Trump that the supposed letter they printed by President Trump to Epstein was a FAKE and, if they print it, they will be sued,” Trump wrote.

“President Trump will be suing The Wall Street Journal, NewsCorp, and Mr. Murdoch, shortly.”

Trump told reporters are the White House he believed some of the Epstein files were “made up” by former Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden and former FBI Director James Comey.

Trump said on Thursday he has asked Bondi to release “any and all pertinent Grand Jury testimony” on Epstein, after what he called a “ridiculous amount of publicity”.

Bondi said: “We are ready to move the court tomorrow to unseal the grand jury transcripts.”

On Tuesday, the US President said Bondi should release “whatever she thinks is credible” on Epstein.

Trump had faced pressure from his supporters to make the files public.

A refusal to release them sparked speculation that the administration was hiding details of Epstein’s crimes to protect the high-profile figures he associated with, which included Trump.

On the campaign trial, Trump had said he would release FBI files related to Epstein. Bondi, on his instruction, made the same promise.

In February, the Justice Department released some government documents regarding the case, but there were no new revelations.

After a months-long review of additional evidence, the department earlier this month released a video meant to prove that Epstein took his own life, but said no other files related to the case would be made public.

Conservatives and conspiracy theorists lashed out at Trump and Bondi for declining to release more files in the case.

    4. Musk previously claimed Trump was in the Epstein files

Tech billionaire Elon Musk previously alleged that Trump was in the Epstein files, which this report in The Wall Street Journal appears to confirm.

On 6 June, the former head of Doge, the Department of Government Efficiency, posted on X that Trump is “in the Epstein files”.

The White House denied the allegation and Musk, whose relationship with Trump soured in recent months, deleted his post.

Despite Musk’s previous comments, following the report from the Journal, Musk defended Trump, adding: “It really doesn’t sound like something Trump would say tbh.”
