HENRIETTA, N.Y. — The Rochester Institute of Technology has announced that Stuart, or “Stu” Hughes, a fan favorite Zamboni driver, has died at the age of 64.
Hughes was diagnosed with cancer back in 2024, with the tiger community coming together to support him during his diagnosis.

Hughes was a longtime favorite for RIT hockey fans for about three decades. At just 18, Hughes began working on the university grounds.
After 20 years, he then became the ice operations manager of Frank Ritter Arena and the Gene Polisseni Center when it opened in 2014.
On the RIT website, Executive Director of Athletics Jackie Nicholson said Hughes was a “fixture of our hockey community,” and made the rink feel like a second home.
“You couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride when you set foot in the rink and saw the flawless sheet of ice, he always had ready, just waiting to be skated on. Game nights won’t be the same without Stu,” said Nicholson.
During the 2024-25 season, they held a “Support Stu Night,” where Hughes drove the Zamboni one last time while battling cancer. His last official game driving the Zamboni was back in March of 2024.
Public calling hours will be on Thursday, July 24 from 3-7 p.m. at the Miller Funeral Home in Henrietta. RIT will be lowering its flag on this day to honor and remember Hughes.
