A deadly mystery is unfolding in a rural LaSalle County town where two people were found dead after a house fire, and authorities believe a dangerous suspect may be on the run.
The two bodies were found inside a home in Sheridan, Illinois, which had burst into flames early Thursday morning just after police were called for a report of gunfire.
According to the LaSalle County Sheriff’s office, police received a 911 call just before 1 a.m. reporting shots fired at the home near North 42nd and East 25-51st Roads. By 1:17 a.m., police were then notified the same house was on fire.
After the flames were put out, police said deputies discovered two people dead inside the home.
“We do have a suspect, and the search is continuing with the help of the Illinois State Police and the U.S. Marshals,” the sheriff’s office said. “At this time, we believe this was an isolated incident.”
Authorities called the suspect “armed and dangerous,” though they did not release a description of the person or vehicle they are looking for, saying they do not want to “tip off” the individual.
“There is an alert going out through the local news media just to keep on the lookout, support and report anything suspicious,” LaSalle County Undersheriff David Ortiz said.
Police said the cause of death for the individuals found inside the home remained unclear.
Two other people were reported to be in the home at the time of the incident, but further details weren’t immediately released.
