Chicago Marathon champ, world record holder Ruth Chepngetich suspended over test result

Chicago Marathon champion and world record holder Ruth Chepngetich has been “provisionally suspended” following the results of a testing sample taken earlier this year, the Athletics Integrity Unit announced Thursday.

According to the AIU, a “prohibited substance” was detected in a sample from Chepngetich taken on March 14. The agency said the sample tested positive for a diuretic.

The AIU was notified of the test result in April and said Chepngetich “opted for a voluntary provisional suspension” during an investigation. Officials said she complied with the investigation and a suspension was not mandatory under the World Anti-Doping Code.

“In the intervening months, the AIU continued its investigation and today issued a Notice of Charge and imposed its own provisional suspension,” AIU Head Brett Clothier said in a release.

Diuretics, the agency said, “may be abused to mask the presence in urine of other prohibited substances.” The specific diuretic detected in this case was hydrochlorothiazide, which is “used clinically to treat fluid retention and hypertension.”

Chepngetich’s 2024 victory in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon marked a world record and the first time a woman has run a marathon in under 2 hours and 10 minutes.

In response to Thursday’s announcement, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon said it “will await the completion of the process by the AIU and any appeal by Chepngetich before providing further comment.”

“The Bank of America Chicago Marathon has and continues to be an advocate for strict anti-doping measures including drug testing procedures and protocols both in and out of competition,” the marathon said in a statement. “As a World Athletics Platinum Label event, every professional athlete who competes in the Chicago Marathon’s professional athlete field is subject to the rules, regulations and anti-doping processes set forth by World Athletics, the World Anti-Doping Agency and the United States Anti-Doping Agency.”

The AIU noted Chepngetich “has the right for her case to be heard before a Disciplinary Tribunal” and said it will “not comment further until this matter has been concluded.”
