Fantastic Four: First Steps Cuts Iconic 71-Year-Old Actor From Finished Film

As with its fellow DCU rival Superman, many viewers are anticipating that The Fantastic Four: First Steps will be one of the biggest movies of 2025 yet.

An upcoming superhero epic of gargantuan proportions, The Fantastic Four also marks the titular team's official entry into the larger MCU, completing a longtime dream project fans have spent years avidly waiting to see.

With the amount of pressure riding on The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Marvel's producers have been hard at work making several critical changes to the finished film before its eventual release on July 24.

Above all else, these last-minute changes have resulted in certain characters being scrubbed from the finished film, as happens to be the case for John Malkovich's supporting villain, Red Ghost.

Though featured in early promotional advertisements for the film, The Fantastic Four's director, Matt Shakman, confirmed to Variety that Malkovich had been completely removed from the movie.

According to Shakman, the "heartbreaking" decision came from a desire to spend more time on the film's foremost main characters, namely Mister Fantastic (Pedro Pascal), Invisible Woman (Vanessa Kirby), the Human Torch (Joseph Quinn) and The Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach.

“There were a lot of things that ultimately ended up hitting the cutting room floor,” Shakman told Variety. “When we were building a ’60s retro-future world, introducing all of these villains, introducing these four main characters as a group, as well as individually, introducing the idea of a child — there was a lot of stuff to balance in this movie and some things had to go ultimately in terms of shaping the film for its final version.”

Malkovich was set to play vintage Fantastic Four villain Red Ghost: a vengeful Soviet scientist who leads a genetically advanced trio of Super-Apes. In the original iteration of the film, he would have appeared as an early antagonist for the Fantastic Four ahead of the movie's main villain, Galactus (Ralph Ineson).

“It was heartbreaking not to include him in the final version of the movie because he’s one of my very favorite humans and one of my biggest inspirations,” Fantastic Four's director said of Malkovich's removal. “What he’s done on stage as an actor and what he’s done as a director in theater as well as in film, and as just a film actor of incredible ability — I was honored he came to play.”
