ALBANY, N.Y. – School districts in New York State have two weeks to finalize their new phone policies as a new law prohibits students from using their smartphones during the school day.
That policy goes into effect in the fall. As News10NBC has covered, Gov. Kathy Hochul signed legislation banning smartphones or other internet-enabled devices in grades kindergarten through 12th for the entire school day, unless in an emergency. California, Florida, Indiana, Louisiana, Minnesota, Ohio, South Carolina, and Virginia have already adopted a similar ban, aiming to reduce distractions in schools.
Hochul stopped by MSNBC’s Morning Joe and shared her hopes for New York’s students as the ban is set to begin this upcoming school year.
“They’re not developing into fully functional adults emerging as 18-year-olds anymore because they’re not used to communicating. They don’t make eye contact. They don’t talk to each other. So, this is going to change the quality of life for these kids and hopefully help their mental health,” Hochul said.
The deadline for school districts to finalize their policies is July 31, so students, parents and staff have time to review all of the changes ahead of the new school year.
